Five Reasons Gen Z Will Consider Manufacturing as a Career

Gen Z may just be the answer to the manufacturing industry’s skilled trade shortage. According to a recent study by Leading2Lean, one third of this generation, which ranges from 18-22 years old, has had manufacturing suggested as a career option. That number was only one in five for Millennials. The study also suggested that Gen Z is intrigued by careers in manufacturing. They are more likely to consider working in it and less likely to view it as a declining industry. Here’s a quick look at five reasons manufacturing jobs are becoming more appealing to this generation and what you can do to ensure you are attracting this group of new collar workers.
  1. Manufacturing is transforming at warp speed - We have seen the manufacturing world transform over the last few generations. Work spaces are more modern, sophisticated and connected and the products and technology being produced are becoming more advanced, which is an extremely appealing proposition for a generation that has never lived without a smart phone. With everything from artificial intelligence to augmented reality integrated into today’s more industrial companies, it’s easier to reinforce that a career in manufacturing can be an ideal opportunity backed by hands on experience, great pay and flexibility.
  2. Technology is a huge draw – Let’s face it, Gen Z are digital natives, and their day to day lives revolve around mobile. That means they expect technology on the job to deliver that same type of experience. So, naturally, they will be drawn to manufacturing opportunities that can offer experiences with highly sophisticated technology, such as wearables, sensors and advanced robotics on the factory floor as well as interactive training and gamification opportunities.
  3. They’re a hands-on generation – Because they have been raised in the digital world,  they are eager to take on DIY, tangible experiences. That’s because as one article put it, they’ve been “baking, building, carving and coding” since childhood. If they don’t know how to do something, they go online to sites like YouTube and search how to fix whatever they are working on. With a problem solver mentality, experts think this generation is set to not just show up but to perform and bring their solutions-focused mindset with them to the manufacturing sector.
  4. They can skip college and avoid debt – Do a quick search and the shortages in skilled trades and manufacturing are abundant. Some students may have no desire to go to college, or they simply can’t afford to shell out $20-$30,000 or more for a four-year degree. It’s finally becoming clear that skilled labor and manufacturing jobs are great career options that pay well.  As a manufacturer, you should consider investing in recruiting and training geared toward Gen Z (and maybe even their parents), so they understand what type of training and schooling they will have access to and get them up to speed as quickly as possible. It’s appealing that there are some 30 million jobs in the United States that pay an average of $55,000 per year that don't require bachelor's degrees.
  5. There is opportunity for career growth – It’s hard to believe that there are at least six million jobs going unfilled in manufacturing, according to some stats. The good news for this generation though is that there is plenty of opportunity for growth. And that needs to be played up. Companies should be offering Gen Z’s training and advancement opportunities, providing them with an empowering work environment that promotes from within and implementing the right technology and tools to help these workers be more effective on the job. This will set your next generation up for success and show them that you are investing in them for the long haul. This should not only bring Gen Z through the door, but also ensure that they stay part of your team.
