The Role of Data in Employee Engagement Programs

Dashboards, Smart PPE and new algorithms help retain talent

Organizations are doing whatever it takes to create deeper-rooted connections with their employees as most are fully aware of how important engagement is to driving better business outcomes in today’s job environment. So, how do you know what you are doing is effective? Data-driven analytics, HR dashboards, artificial intelligence and smart PPE all play a critical role in determining how well you are doing in the area of employee engagement.  Not only do these platforms provide leadership and key HR personnel with quick insights at a glance, they can also be used to  make important decisions when it comes to talent, hiring, safety and more.
There are several ways you can use the power of analytics—and specifically, analytics presented through data dashboards and smart technology — to drive employee engagement and support the success of your business. Here are just a few of the top ones.

  • Employee focused metrics – Dashboards like those deployed within the Corvex platform allow you to stay apprised of important metrics such as productivity, retention, sales, customer acquisitions and more. This information is extremely useful for internal purposes but can also be used as a motivator and way to engage employees. Being transparent and giving them access to data relative to their own performance helps them identify and respond to possible concerns more quickly and allows your organization to see how engaged they are in their career. Employee dashboards can also be used to drive interaction and create a sense of community. For instance, employees who can view company announcements and training opportunities, as well as see who might have a birthday or who is on PTO, may feel more of a connection to the organization.
  • Turnover rates – Exit interviews have always served a purpose for employers, but they often provide information that’s too little too late. That’s all changing as technology and data become more readily available and something known as the ‘quitting algorithm’ has been introduced. Some researchers have been testing the use of big data and machine-learning algorithms to help create a system that indicates when an employee is about to turn in their notice. The first is what they call “turnover shocks, which are events that prompt workers to consider leaving an organization. This could be a change in leadership or major acquisition, for example, and was measured with events including news articles about a company, changes in stock value and legal action taken against the firm.” They also looked at what they referred to as “job embeddedness,” which is how connected an employee felt to an organization – analyzing how many previous employment positions that person had, how long their tenure was and more to help determine the likelihood of someone quitting. While this is helpful, also looking at leadership, the reason they left and who they reported to will also help you get to a root cause.
  • Safety engagement – Many industries understand the importance of smart sensors, connected technology and high-tech PPE for improving operations, safety and efficiencies. Almost two-fifths of companies are using sensors in equipment to collect data. By incorporating wearables and sensors, end-users gain a richer and safer work experience, which in turn helps improve their job satisfaction and engagement. Because workers feel empowered and are able to send information through their devices, communication becomes much more two-way. When smart PPE is used to create a more open line of communication with a team or supervisor, it helps identify risk and incentivize workers when they model safe behavior. Corvex’s engagement platform is designed to help create highly-motivated and highly-engaged employees where safety and engagement are number one priorities.
It's clear that the Engagement Effect on front-line workers in manufacturing and construction quantifiable and significant including over 40% reduction in absenteeism and 40% reduction in defects, as well as a 24% reduction in turnover. Gallup reports that organizations with strong engagement experience a 21% increase in profitability.
